This was the first championship game involving Surrey to be abandoned without a ball being bowled since their visit to Old Trafford in April 2001. In terms of championship matches at the Oval, it was the first abandonment since Surrey v Hampshire in May 1981, which pre-dated the introduction of four-day cricket.
