GLAMORGAN DRAGONS V SURREY LIONS at Cardiff (TSL1), 27 JUNE 2004

The team that has lost just once in Division One of the Totesport League plays the team that has only won once.  Not surprisingly the current 10-11 on favourites to lift this season's title, Glamorgan, are 4-7 on to do the double over visitors Surrey, who are flirting dangerously with relegation.

They may be without Aussie duo Elliott and Kasprowicz, but with Michael Powell due to return to the fold after being put on standby for England's Marcus Trescothick the Dragons are likely to be more than a match for the injury-ravaged and despondent Lions.  Surrey can take some comfort from knowing that they have won on three out of their last four one-day visits to Cardiff, but that's just about all.

With the bat, the Welshmen have been well served by Croft, Maynard and Powell, who have all made at least two half-centuries in this year's competition.  Pinch-hitting skipper Robert Croft has struck two in a row at the top of the order for the Dragons.  Glamorgan's underrated attack, meanwhile, is being led by Andrew Davies (fourteen TSL wickets at 19.14 runs apiece), with Alex Wharf in close attendance (12 wickets at an average of 21.08).

With no Mike Kasprowicz, perhaps Darren Thomas will make a rare appearance.  Remember him?  He was the unfortunate bowler who went for 9-0-108-3 on the day Alistair Brown broke the record for the highest individual score in limited-overs cricket, at The Oval just over two years ago.  He did make a quick 71 not out in the same game, though.

Glamorgan are virtually unstoppable over 45 overs.  Furthermore, they have not lost at home in the Totesport League.  When one thinks back to the start of the season when the Dragons won with exactly half their overs to spare against a Lions team that did not have the hangdog look they currently sport, no sane person would predict anything other than a victory for the Welshmen.

Surrey's injury list is growing all the time.  Assuming they have all but written off their chances of staying in Division One, the Oval outfit are unlikely to risk Bicknell and Ormond for the second match running, so expect Danny Miller and Philip Sampson to make their first appearances of the season; and for James Benning to return in place of either Mark Butcher (finger) or Graham Thorpe (achillies).

R Croft (capt), I Thomas, A Wharf, M Powell, M Maynard, D Hemp, M Wallace (wk), D Thomas, D Harrison, A Davies and D Cosker.
