SURREY LIONS V HAMPSHIRE HAWKS at the Brit Oval (TSL1), 3 MAY 2004

As in the County Championship, Hampshire have started their 2004 one-day league campaign with two wins out of two. It is somewhat surprising, then, that they are priced at 7-4 for tomorrow's encounter, while struggling Surrey have been made the 2-5 favourites. Maybe the bookies have looked at the recent history between these two sides, which shows that the Oval outfit have won six out of the last seven limited-overs meetings.

The secret to the Hawks' Totesport League success seems to be their ability to skittle sides out. Warwickshire managed 189 in 42.4 overs and today, at the Rose Bowl, Essex lasted 43.1 before eventually being dismissed for 153. The wickets have been shared around, but Shane Warne (with five) and the highly promising Chris Tremlett (four), are currently heading the pack. As if to demonstrate the potential weakness that is Hampshire's batting only Will Kendall has reached double figures in both of their TSL matches.

When I spoke to Steve Rixon yesterday I asked him whether he had been sufficiently impressed with Shane Warne's galvanised Hampshire to make changes for tomorrow. He said: "Surrey have been dominating this competition for some time now. If we start to divert to what the opposition are thinking and what they are going to do, we'll be taking our eye off the ball. I believe I have got an outstanding cricket side turning up on Monday and I'll be very disappointed if the result isn't a positive one because we played extraordinarily badly against Glamorgan. I think the guys have got a few points to prove and they were quite embarrassed about it. So, it would be good to see them turn that around."

If it wasn't for tomorrow's weather forecast - starting dry but rain later - I would be seriously considering giving up with predictions. But on the basis that the only time I've seen the sun in the last week was when Surrey weren't playing, it seems safe to assume that this match will fall victim to the elements. Perhaps, given the form that Hampshire are in, it would be a blessing in disguise.

Despite Steve Rixon's assertion that there would be no changes to the plan, plus the suggestion that the team which let itself down against Glamorgan would be given the chance to atone for its opening round defeat, Mark Butcher and Graham Thorpe - two of the world's best against spin - have been added to the team that lost to Glamorgan. Not worried then?
