SURREY LIONS V WORCESTERSHIRE ROYALS at Guildford (NCL1), 27 JULY 2003

Worcestershire's championship match at Cheltenham, which ended today, saw the visitors have the better of a draw against Gloucestershire, but in National League terms they come into tomorrow's encounter on the back of four consecutive defeats - not the sort of run one would have expected from last year's runners-up in Division One.  Surrey's championship record at Guildford is supreme, but their one-day form there suggests they are fallible.  So, whoever wins will be bucking a trend.

Despite the Royals indifferent run, Anurag Singh has been on fire recently in limited-overs cricket.  The 27-year-old has an average of 63.00 from four innings, ahead of Graeme Hick and Vikram Solanki (320 runs at 45.71).  Worcestershire's bowling has not been totally ineffective either.  Seamer Matt Mason (16 wickets at an average of 20.06) and spinner Gareth Batty are now proven one-day performers.  If Andrew Hall was more of a wicket-taking bowler and Nantie Hayward more economical the Royals attack could be a real handful.

With Surrey back to full strength it is difficult to see them losing to Worcestershire, especially given the Royals recent NCL form.

Azhar Mahmood and Adam Hollioake are expected to return from injury, but Jonathan Batty may not play after being felled twice by Ashley Noffke.  Ben Scott is on standby to make the second NCL appearance of his fledgling career.

S Peters, V Solanki, A Singh, G Hick, B Smith (capt), A Hall, G Batty, S Rhodes (wk), Kabir Ali, M Mason and N Hayward.
