LEICESTERSHIRE FOXES V SURREY LIONS at Leicester (TSL2), 15 MAY 2005

Leicestershire's start to the totesport League season has almost been as bad as Surrey's. Both have lost three out of three, but the Foxes' net run rate is -3.55 to the Lions' incredible -34.83. The home side tomorrow also have the advantage of knowing that they have won six out of the last seven one-day meetings between these two sides.

For Leicestershire, runs have been in short supply in limited-overs cricket. Only Darren Maddy (130 runs, average 32.50) has collected over a hundred in the Foxes four one-day outings to date. Other than Maddy and Otis Gibson no batsman is currently averaging more than thirty.

Charlie Dagnall has been their most frugal bowler in one-day cricket this year, but there is no doubt that Charl Willoughby has been the most destructive - having taken 7 wickets at an average of 11.57 so far. In my preview to the season I described Willoughby as as b-list, which means he will probably collect another 'fifer' tomorrow to add to the one he bagged against Somerset in the C&G Trophy!

The good news for Surrey is that Alistair Brown (58.80 and 2 centuries), Mark Ramprakash (56.85 and one hundred) and Martin Bicknell (53.00) all average over fifty with the bat against Leicestershire in limited-overs cricket. Ramprakash's career best with the ball - 5-38 amazingly - came against the Foxes at Lord's in 1993.

If Surrey fail to win this one then we can probably kiss goodbye to any chance of promotion. So, for once, I'll be optimistic about our chances and say: "Lions win".

Azhar Mahmood (shin) and Tim Murtagh (side strain) look set to return to playing action. Assuming they do, the visitors will be a better-looking one-day unit on paper. Meanwhile, Graham Thorpe (back) is expected to return to the fold in Tuesday's C&G Trophy match at Bristol.
