NORTHAMPTONSHIRE STEELBACKS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Northampton (Pro40 League), 13 SEPTEMBER 2009

With just one win each in this year's Pro40 for both of these sides, who, as a result, are currently languishing at the wrong end of the Division Two table, it is hard to get excited about tomorrow's clash, which is likely to be contested by a couple of weakened teams. But, interestingly, when Surrey have travelled to Wantage Road for a one-dayer in recent years, the match has often gone down to the wire.

That the Steelbacks managed to tie with Warwickshire two weeks' ago owed everything to Andrew Hall's unbeaten 104, which he followed up with respectable bowling figures. But for an opening stand of 153 between Stephen Peters and Niall O'Brien against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay in Northants' previous match, they would still be searching for their first victory. One look at Northamptonshire's List A batting averages for this term bears out how inconsistent the Steelbacks have been with the bat in one-day cricket. Only Nicky Boje, the Northants skipper, has made over 250 runs in 2009. He averages 34.62. The story with the bowling has been a lack of economy and penetration. Other than Hall, who has been awkward to get after, Boje and Lee Daggett there has not been much to write home about.

For Surrey, Arun Harinath and Rangana Herath are poised to make their one-day debuts for the Brown Caps. Of the Steelbacks, Monty Panesar has 49 List A career wickets, Johann van der Wath has 1,998 List A career runs and Robert White is poised to make his 75th List A appearance.

Tim Linley and Stuart Meaker will return to playing action after being rested for the championship match against Northants at the Oval, which ended in a draw this afternoon. Gary Wilson is preferred to Jonathan Batty with the wicketkeeper's gloves. Jordan (side strain), King (bruised toe), Nel (left elbow) and Ramprakash (right thumb) are all out of contention on grounds of fitness.
