SOMERSET SABRES V SURREY LIONS at Taunton (TSL2), 2 MAY 2005

Surrey find Somerset, who have drawn blanks against Durham UCCE as well as in their opening two championship fixtures, breathing a sigh of relief after struggling to pick up their first win of the new season.

In the totesport League the Cidermen made a very handy start in their first outing, against Warwickshire, by scoring 254-5 before the elements intervened. That included a wonderful 107 off 134 balls by Michael Burns and half-centuries from Parsons and the highly promising Hildreth, who struck 54 in 36 deliveries. But the Sabres could not repeat that level of effort last week against Yorkshire, who knocked off the requirement with more than five overs remaining.

However, in their third one-day league match, at home to Leicestershire today, John Francis (73*) and Keith Parsons (91*) put on an unbeaten 157 for the third wicket to register Somerset's first success, which was set up by Gareth Andrew's 3-48 and a miserly stint of 9-2-17-2 from Aaron Laraman.

How the visiting Lions must have wished that the Foxes could do them a favour. Surrey's attack for tomorrow's encounter will be shorn of Azhar Mahmood, Martin Bicknell, Rikki Clarke and Tim Murtagh, and the Ovalites' recent record at Taunton is nothing to write home about - just one win from their previous six one-dayers there.

The Sabres bat all the way down to number eight in limited-overs cricket, and perhaps a symptom of this was that last summer they lacked a couple of batsmen capable of capitalising on a decent start. Sanath Jayasuriya is yet to match the output previously attained by Jamie Cox, who has gone back to Tasmania, so the only batter on show tomorrow who has been there and done it on a consistent basis in the last twelve months is Parsons (535 runs at a strike rate of 90.83 per 100 balls in List A cricket in 2004).

Last term Simon Francis was Somerset's leading wicket-taker in List A cricket (24 scalps at 25.08 runs apiece, including figures of 8-66 against Derbyshire in the C&G Trophy). McLean and Parsons chipped in on occasions while Andrew, a 21-year-old off spinner, impressed in his nine one-day outings.

Surrey's luck has got to change soon in the totesport, but after blowing up against the Yorkshire Phoenix and the Durham Dynamos the last place they would have wanted to go next must have been Taunton. I predicted that last week's clash at Durham would be close, and was wrong. I don't think I will be wrong when I suggest that tomorrow's clash will be a tense affair, however I cannot see the visitors winning with such a long tail and a weakened attack. The arrival of Harbhajan Singh cannot come a day too soon.

Emergency Ward Ten moves on to the West Country. Surrey's reserve keeper, Andrew Hodd, 21, is set to make his first eleven debut as a batsman. With the ball, Neil Saker, 20, will probably be making his maiden appearance in the one-day league and Philip Sampson comes in for the first time this summer. Nineteen-year-old seamer Jade Dernbach is placed on standby.

M Burns, S Jayasuriya, J Francis, K Parsons, J Hildreth, I Blackwell, R Turner (capt, wk), A Laraman, G Andrew, R Johnson and S Francis.
