SURREY LIONS V DERBYSHIRE PHANTOMS (TSL2), 17 JULY 2005

Derbyshire are something of a bogey side as far as Surrey are concerned. As well as losing two out their last three meetings with them (and only scraping a win in the third), the Ovalites have not beaten the Nottingham Road outfit in one-day knockout cricket since 1986.

The Phantoms will be without left-arm seamer Kevin Dean following a freak injury at the club's golf day in the week. Dean was playing with a group of fellow players at Horsley Lodge, when his electric buggy rolled on a slope. He dislocated his left elbow in the accident and had to be hospitalised overnight.

However, the visitors will have Australians Michael Di Venuto and Joe Moss. Di Venuto has struck two one-day hundreds this season, while Moss has been Derbyshire's most consistent performer with the bat with 360 runs at an average of 40 in List A cricket. Opener Steve Stubbings has come good of late, but, otherwise, the batting order should not hold too many fears for Azhar Mahmood, Tim Murtagh and Co.

Moss has also been the Phantoms' star with the ball. He will be supported by the frugal Mo Sheikh and partnership-breaker Ant Botha, who currently has 19 wickets at 18.36 runs apiece in List A one-day cricket this summer.

Even though my beloved Lions have only tasted victory in one out of their last four one-day outings and, for that matter, just three of their last 13 totesport League fixtures, I cannot see the Phantoms spooking them tomorrow.

In recent weeks Mohammad Akram, Martin Bicknell, Jimmy Ormond and Graham Thorpe have been rested whenever a meaningless one-dayer has come along. However, in the last week or so Surrey's bowling attack has appeared a bit ring-rusty. So, it will be interesting to see if Steve Rixon sticks to his rotation policy with crucial contests coming up this week in the Twenty20 Cup and the championship. If you want my opinion, I think he'll go back to the likes of Neil Saker and Ian Salisbury for Derbyshire's visit to the Oval.

M Di Venuto, S Stubbings, J Moss, J Bryant, L Sutton (capt, wk), G Welch, T Friend, T Lungley, A Botha, A Gray and M Sheikh.
