SURREY V HAMPSHIRE at the Brit Oval (C&G Quarter-Final), 15 JULY 2005

The bookmakers have Surrey and Hampshire neck and neck going into tomorrow’s Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy quarter-final. Three weeks ago the Hawks registered only their second success over Surrey in nine limited-overs outings, when they won the Twenty20 Cup South Group clash between the two sides. It was achieved without the likes of Mascarenhas, Pietersen, Tremlett and Warne. So, with Dimitri Mascarenhas and Chris Tremlett returning to the Hampshire fold and Shane Watson in as the overseas replacement for his fellow countryman, it is indeed looking finely balanced. Consequently, both counties are rated as 6/1 chances to win the final, which takes place at Lord’s on 3 September, but the visitors would still dearly love to have Kevin Pietersen fit. After all, the 25-year-old has struck half-centuries in each of the previous two rounds.

Hampshire reach this point having brushed aside Shropshire and Glamorgan. In the last game, at Cardiff, they dismissed the Welshmen for 214 with Sean Ervine taking 5-50 and Chris Tremlett chipping in with 3-32. Wicketkeeper-opener Nic Pothas then struck an unbeaten 114 to see the Hawks home after a faltering start to their reply, but Pietersen’s 69 off 64 balls, which included four sixes, arguably stole the show. The other dangers as far as the hosts are concerned are Shaun Udal, who has taken 15 wickets at an average of 14.93 in this summer’s totesport League, and the Zimbabwe-born Greg Lamb, who recently struck an unbeaten 100 against Northants in the same competition.

I don't think I've got a prediction wildly wrong for some time. So, seeing as I think tomorrow's game is there for the taking, that probably means that Hampshire will pull off a second surprise win over the Oval outfit in the space of three weeks. One thing I am sure off is that whoever wins will not walk away with it.

What can I tell you that you don't already know? The only surprise absentee from Surrey's squad for tomorrow is Martin Bicknell. Apparently he has a slight hamstring strain. There's still no word on when Mark Butcher will be fit; perhaps the fact that he has joined the Independent on Sunday's editorial team is a sign that he expects to watch quite a bit of the Ashes.
