SURREY BROWN CAPS V NORTHAMPTONSHIRE STEELBACKS at the Brit Oval (Pro40 League), 17 AUGUST 2008

These two sides haven't played each other in limited-overs cricket for nearly four years. Prior to that, however, the Steelbacks won four out of five against Surrey. But, with neither protagonist in with a chance of promotion to Division One, tomorrow's match could well be an opportunity to blood a few youngsters.

Assuming they stick with their established one-day line-up, the visitors will be looking to Stephen Peters (359 runs at an average of 51.28 in List A cricket this term) to provide the runs, with help from Lance Klusener down the order. But David Sales and Rob White have not scored the weight of runs the Northants' fans had been hoping for at the start of the season.

With the ball it has been a slightly better story. However, only Nicky Boje (11 victims at 23.09 runs apiece) and Johann van der Wath are into double figures as far as List A wickets are concerned this summer. Andrew Hall has roughed up a few batsmen, though, and off-spinner Jason Brown has proved extremely economical, but the wait for left-arm seamer David Lucas to make his mark continues.

Usman Afzaal is 34 away from 5,000 runs in List A cricket and 2 away from 50 List A wickets. Jonathan Batty is set to make his 175th List A appearance. For Northants, Jason Brown is set for his 150th one-day outing, while Johann van der Wath is poised for his 125th.

Surrey will be giving a debut to Robert Frylinck, a 23-year-old all-rounder from KwaZulu-Natal, whom the Brown Caps have signed as Kolpak until the end of the season. Pedro Collins, a Kolpak himself, is the man to miss out.
