SUSSEX SHARKS V SURREY LIONS at Hove (TSL2), 31 AUGUST 2005

The Division Two leaders, Sussex, go into tomorrow night's totesport League fixture with Surrey having won four out of their last six National League meetings with the Lions, who must surely have accepted the inevitable by now; i.e. that they will still be in one-day cricket's basement division at the beginning of next season.

This year, as in recent summers, the key to beating Sussex has been to account for their top order cheaply. But that has often been easier said than done. Matt Prior, who is promoted in the order for the Sharks’ one-day forays, has scored 727 runs at an average of 45.43 in List A cricket this term, and whether he has opened with Ward or Richard Montgomerie, Sussex have rarely started poorly. And then comes the likes of Chris Adams and Murray Goodwin. Perhaps the only weak link is Michael Yardy, who is averaging a disappointing 17.25 despite enjoying a purple patch in the championship.

With the ball the Sharks have four regulars who can really put the brakes on the opposition batsmen - James Kirtley, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Luke Wright and off-spinner Mark Davis. But Sussex’s forte has been bowling sides out before the 45 overs are up. For this they have looked to Kirtley, along with Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and, when the ball turns, Yardy and Mushtaq Ahmed. In short the Martlets are strong in all areas, which probably explains why they have all but booked their place in Division One for next summer and will, in all probability, go up as champions.

Other than Somerset, Sussex are the best team I have seen in Division Two of the totesport League this summer. So, given that the Lions will be licking their wounds after being put to the sword by Ian Blackwell, logic would suggest there is only one possible outcome to tomorrow night's floodlit affair down at Hove - a Sharks win.

Some good news for once. Rikki Clarke (fractured hand) is fit again and will replace Ian Salisbury, who is dropped from the Lions side that went down to the Somerset Sabres on Sunday.

R Montgomerie, M Prior (wk), M Yardy, C Adams (capt), M Goodwin, C Hopkinson, R Martin-Jenkins, L Wright, Mushtaq Ahmed, Naved-ul-Hasan, J Kirtley.
