WARWICKSHIRE BEARS V SURREY LIONS at Edgbaston (TSL2), 14 SEPTEMBER 2005

Surrey's opponents Warwickshire are still very much in with a shout of promotion, but their hopes rest on a clutch of games in hand. Frustratingly from their point of view the washout at Leicester on 22 August has since been followed by defeats at home to Sussex and away to Somerset, both under lights, when the Bears were undone by the unlikely combination of Michael Yardy and Wesley Durston.

With the bat, skipper Nick Knight (810 runs in List A cricket at an average of 54.00 this term) has chipped in with four one-day hundreds this summer. Carter, Trott and Loudon have had their moments. Indeed, Jonathan Trott came to the partly in a big way in Warwickshire's most recent totesport League outing, making an unbeaten 112 at Taunton.

Neil Carter is currently the Bears' leading wicket-taker in limited-overs cricket in 2005 (31 victims at an average 22.41), but the out of contract left-arm seamer has also been expensive. For control the Brummies have looked to Dougie Brown, but will miss the likes of Heath Streak (who is tipped to take over the reins at Edgbaston next year) and Makhaya Ntini. James Anyon and Naqaash Tahir will both the given rare outings tomorrow night, therefore, while, for back-up, the hosts could well turn to Trott’s teasing slow to medium pace dobblers.

Approaching milestones: Warwickshire's Neil Carter looks set to make his 100th appearance in List A one-day cricket and, for Surrey, wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty is searching for his 150th List A dismissal while Azhar Mahmood needs 59 runs to hit the 3,000-mark.

Surrey have lost on each of their last three visits to Edgbaston in the National League and it would not surprise me if they were turned there over again tomorrow night. But those of us who were lucky enough to witness the demolition job the Lions did on the Derbyshire Phantoms know that another spirited performance from Mark Butcher's cubs could also signal the end of the Warwickshire Bears' promotion hopes. At this time of year, however, much depends on the toss, as we saw in tonight's floodlit clash between Glamorgan and Hampshire at Cardiff.

The visitors look set to field the same eleven that won at Derby nine days ago, which means James Benning, Nayan Doshi, Chris Murtagh and Stewart Walters travelling up to Birmingham while Mohammad Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq, Scott Newman and Mark Ramprakash go in the opposite direction down the M40.

N Carter, N Knight (capt), J Trott, J Troughton, A Loudon, I Westwood, T Penney, D Brown, T Frost (wk), N Tahir and J Anyon.
