YORKSHIRE PHOENIX V SURREY LIONS (TSL2), 13 JULY 2005

Surrey might just might fancy playing the Yorkshire Phoenix right now. The Tykes have lost four out of their last five one-day games, albeit they were in the Twenty20 Cup. But at the forefront of the Lions' minds will be the thumping they received off Yorkshire at the beginning of the totesport League campaign. On that occasion Azhar Mahmood was injured and Nayan Doshi proved to be the only Surrey bowler capable of exerting any pressure.

Phil Jacques (287 runs at an average of 47.83) is currently at the head of the Phoenix's one-day batting averages, however Harvey, Lumb and McGrath also have two half-centuries to their names, and Matthew Wood opened his totesport League account with that well-constructed 111 off 127 balls against the Surrey Lions. With the ball, Craig White (20 wickets at 10.40 runs apiece) is head and shoulders above the rest of Yorkshire's attack in terms of victims claimed, but both Hoggard and Kruis have proven difficult for the batsmen to get away.

Historically, Craig White will be the man Surrey fear most. In List A encounters he has made 315 runs at an average of 52.50 and claimed 17 wickets at 21.29 runs apiece against the Oval outfit. That said Matthew Wood has an impressive 331 runs at an average of 47.28, while Ian Harvey has taken 12 wickets at 15.41 per scalp.

Surrey have won seven out of their last eight day/night games in the National League to reach a conclusion - five of them batting second, which belies the myth that chasing under lights puts you at a disadvantage. That said, their recent limited-overs victories at Headingley have been hard fought, so winning the toss - something they haven't done for a while against Yorkshire - would give the visitors a welcome edge. If Surrey do, I would expect them to cause the Tykes an upset in their own back yard.

Mark Ramprakash is expected to make a return to the fold, but Alistair Brown may be kept out by the hand injury he picked up on the final day of Surrey's fruitless championship visit to Bristol. Needless to say, Mark Butcher is making slow progress in terms of overcoming his injured left wrist.

I Harvey, M Wood, P Jaques, M Lumb, A McGrath (capt), C White, I Dawood (wk), R Dawson, T Bresnan, M Hoggard and G Kruis.
