William Hill Sports
DERBYSHIRE V SURREY at Derby (LVCC1), 30 MAY - 2 JUNE 2013

The basement battle in Division One of the LV= County Championship. Now, who would have thought it would be billed as such this early in the season? When these sides met last, a couple of seasons ago, Surrey clinched the fourth successive championship victory they needed to gain promotion. Although the South Londoners have enjoyed their recent exchanges with Derbyshire, they were left looking somewhat red faced by the Peakites in 2009 as well as at the start of 2010.

Should any Surrey followers think their side has problems, they should look at Derbyshire's championship averages - just three batsmen are currently averaging over 21.00 and arguably their two best bowlers - Jonathan Clare and Tim Groenewald - are both conceding over forty runs per wicket.

The only good news story for Derbyshire has been Chesney Hughes's unbeaten 270 against Yorkshire, made in tandem with Wayne Madsen, who hit half-centuries in both innings at Headingley. At other end of the scale all-rounder Ross Whiteley is averaging 5.20 with the bat, while new signing Billy Godleman - who is crawling along at 14.88 in the championship - has struggled to get the ball off the square.

Gareth Batty now has 494 first-class wickets to his name, while Tim Linley needs four more for 150 and Chris Tremlett requires another five for 400. Of the home contingent, Jonathan Clare and Tim Groenewald currently have 145 and 198 first-class wickets respectively.

I'm thinking of changing the heading above to "Weather", because since the UK-wide hosepipe ban of a year ago all it seems to have done is rain. While days two, three and four of this match are set fair, the forecast for the opening day is dire. Should this turn into a three-day contest, forcing a victory could be difficult. Ignoring the weather, though, Surrey are by far the strongest of the two sides on paper.

B Godleman, C Hughes, W Madsen (capt), S Chanderpaul, D Redfern, R Whiteley, A Evans, R Johnson (wk), J Clare, T Groenewald and M Footit.
