DERBYSHIRE PHANTOMS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Chesterfield (Pro 40 League 2), 30 JULY 2006

Derbyshire open their Pro40 campaign at Chesterfield, which, prior to this week, had not been used for a county fixture since 1998. On Surrey's four previous one-day visits to Queen's Park, there have been two Derbyshire victories, followed by an abandonment and a Surrey win, albeit courtesy of a faster scoring rate. But, generally, the contests there have tended to be low scoring affairs.

Rarely a feature in the one-day arena when he was at Yorkshire, Chris Taylor is the Phantoms' leading run-maker in List A cricket this term with 391 runs at an average of 78.20, including hundreds against his former employers as well as Durham. Steve Stubbings has also been a consistent performer in limited-overs mode, despite having a reputation as a bit of a blocker in the County Championship. Marcus North, who is deputising for Travis Burt, goes into this contest in good nick with the bat, but far more is expected from Michael Di Venuto and Hassan Adnan than we have seen to date this season.

Mo Sheikh and, despite his lack of wickets, Graeme Welch have been crucial with the ball for Derbyshire this year. But for wickets in one-day cricket they have looked to Kevin Dean (who is injured yet again), Steffan Jones and Graham Wagg.

Nayan Doshi is set to make his 50th List A appearance. Derbyshire's Andy Gray is also one away from his 50th game, but appears unlikely to feature. The Phantoms' skipper, Graeme Welch has 197 List A wickets to his name.

The Brown Caps look set to field the same side that beat Kent at Guildford last Sunday, though Scott Newman and Stewart Walters will travel as standbys.

The weather looks as if it may play a part, but not enough of a one to rule out a positive result being reached. So if, as Mark Butcher has said his side will do, Surrey attack this game from the off, one has to fancy the Brown Caps' chances.
