DURHAM DYNAMOS V SURREY at the Riverside (CB40), 11 AUGUST 2012

Durham have pulled the rug from beneath Surrey's challenge to remain in Division One of the County Championship. The question, now, is will the Dynamos derail the Oval outfit's bid to retain the Clydesdale Bank 40? History suggests they will, for Surrey have not won away to Durham in any form of competition since 2000.

The hosts' dangers with the willow appear to be Mark Stoneman (294 CB40 runs at an average of 49.00) and Gordon Muchall (average: 57.80), but as we saw in the corresponding four-day encounter, Paul Collingwood and Dale Benkenstein are in a decent vein of form. The key, for Surrey, will be making some early inroads, not just because Phil Mustard is one of the most accomplished pinch-hitters on the county circuit.

Durham's most economical bowler in this year's Clydesdale Bank 40 is Ben Stokes, who has just been called up to the England Lions' squad. If Stokes is rested for tomorrow's clash, much will rest on the shoulders of Chris Rushworth (11 wickets at 11.63 runs apiece) because Graham Onions has not had anywhere near the same level of success in one-day cricket this term. The 29-year-old England seamer is currently averaging 58.50 runs per wicket in the CB40.

Durham's Phil Mustard is set to make his 150th appearance in List A one-day cricket. Gareth Breese, with 1,949 runs, is closing in one two thousand List A career runs, while Paul Collingwood currently has 9,931 runs to his name.

Rory Hamilton-Brown may have relinquished the Surrey captaincy for good, but he's back in the squad for tomorrow's CB40 clash. Expect to see the visitors field the same eleven as the one that did the business at Trent Bridge ten days ago.

Sorry, but I'm really down on optimism right now. The innings defeat during the week was a crushing blow, especially given it was a do or die championship encounter. On paper Durham aren't as frightening a one-day side, but home advantage puts a big tick in their column. Verdict - Dynamos win.

M Stoneman, P Mustard (wk), W Smith, P Collingwood (capt), G Muchall, D Benkenstein, G Breese, S Borthwick, M Claydon, G Onions and C Rushworth.
