ESSEX EAGLES V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Chelmsford (Pro40 League), 5 AUGUST 2008

Of late, Surrey have endured a woeful record against Essex in limited-overs cricket, with only one victory out of their last nine clashes with the Eagles if one chooses to include the Twenty20 Cup. It also seems incomprehensible that a side of Essex's one-day prowess should even be in Division Two of the Pro40 League. In short, the Brown Caps will start tomorrow night's clash as lengthy outsiders.

The Chelmsford outfit boast five batsmen who are averaging over 38.00 in List A cricket this summer. The good news is that Surrey will probably be spared facing three of them - Ravi Bopara and Alistair Cook, who are in the England squad for the Oval Test, and Mark Pettini, who is nursing a groin strain. That said, the visitors will still have to work out how they're going to account for Jason Gallian and Ryan ten Doeschate cheaply. That done, next there's Graham Napier and James Foster to set a trap for. Good luck Ramps!

The Essex attack isn't shabby either. David Masters and James Middlebrook have gone for less than five an over in List A cricket this term, while Danish Kaneria, Napier and ten Doeschate have all been amongst the wickets. That said Masters, with 15 victims at 22.86 runs apiece, with a best of 5-17 against the Brown Caps in the Friends Provident Trophy, leads the way.
