ESSEX V SURREY at Chelmsford (Metro Bank One-Day Cup)
15 AUGUST 2025
Bottom of Group A play host
to seventh-placed Surrey, who got off the mark at the third attempt in this season's
Metro Bank thanks to a Ben Foakes-inspired D/L victory over
Glamorgan at a soggy Oval on Wednesday.
For both of these
teams, however, it has been a chastening start to the 50-over
campaign. Even when winless Essex have had Jamie Porter to call on, the
32-year-old seamer has lacked support; apart from, possibly, Charlie
Bennett who has picked up 5 wickets at 32.20 runs apiece. The return
of Simon Harmer along with the acquisition of fellow South African
turned Irishman Curtis Campher may have come too late for Essex, who, one senses,
need to beat Surrey if they're to stand any chance of progressing to
the knockout phase. In terms of the batting, Charlie Allison, Robin
Das and skipper Tom Westley have all hit half-centuries, while
keeper-batter Simon Fernandes has done little wrong in Michael
Pepper's absence.
Surrey v
Essex - List A Records Sheet

If he plays, left-arm spinner Ralphie
Albert will be making his county debut. Rory Burns (1,901) is
approaching 2,000 List A career runs and Cam Steel is five shy of 50
List A wickets. Turning to Essex, Daniel Gladwell could be in line
his first start alongside Matt Critchley, who will be enjoying his
50th List A outing. Tom Westley (47) is closing in on 50 List A
wickets.

Tommy Ealham, Matt Fisher, Ryan Patel and Dom Sibley are all sidelined
by injury, while, of course, The Hundred accounts for vast majority of
the missing.

Surrey have had the better of their recent one-day tussles with
Essex, who haven't properly dominated the Oval outfit in List A cricket
since 2013. But history could count for very little given the
hosts look much stronger on paper now that they have two overseas players
on board.

R.Das, M.Critchley, T.Westley (capt), C.Allison, L.Benkenstein,
S.Fernandes (wk), C.Campher, S.Harmer, S.Snater, J.Porter and
C.Bennett.

Nigel Llong and Phil Mustard.
