Eighth in Division One hosts sixth. Just 18 points separate the Welshmen and new leaders Essex with 7 red-ball games played and 7 more to come. Since beating Hampshire and Somerset, Glamorgan have drawn with Warwickshire and lost heavily to Sussex. Surrey meanwhile recorded a fifth draw after being denied a shot at victory by the weather. The star of the show against Hampshire was Dan Lawrence, who hit 218 and 101; thus becoming only the third batter to hit a double century and a century in the same match for Surrey (Scott Newman in 2005 and Mark Ramprakash in 2010 being the others).

What has surprised many about Glamorgan this season is their ability to bowl sides out twice. Tim van der Gugten has bagged 24 championship wickets at 25.58, Aussie Ryan Hadley 22 at 29.81 and 18-year-old seamer Tom Morton looks more than useful.

The Welshmen bat a fair way down, but could do with more sizeable contributions from the likes of Sean Dickson, Colin Ingram and Asa Tribe, who are all averaging in the low thirties. Much, therefore, rests on the shoulders of Ben Kellaway (430 runs at 53.75) and skipper Kiran Carlson (589 at 49.08).

If he plays, Henry Hurle will be making his first-class debut for the hosts. Kiran Carlson goes into this contest with 6,899 f-c career runs to his name, while the former England leg-spinner Mason Crane will start on 196 f-c wickets.

Gus Atkinson returns and Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar is in the squad for the first time this season. Will Jacks misses the trip as he has to prepare for England’s upcoming white-ball series. Ben Foakes, Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall are still sidelined by injury.

This will be just the second red-ball meeting between Surrey and Glamorgan since 2015. With the weather set fair and Surrey looking strong on paper (particularly with Rahul Chahar back on board now) everything seems to be pointing to a win for the visitors.
