GLAMORGAN DRAGONS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Cresselly (Friends Provident Trophy), 28 MAY 2007

In recent years, Surrey have found Glamorgan to be resilient opponents on Welsh turf. When the Brown Caps have tasted victory on the other side of the Severn Bridges, it has been a close shave and when they have been on the losing side Surrey have usually been a distant second.

But the Dragons have not been breathing much fire this summer. They are yet to score a victory in one-day or four-day cricket under new skipper David Hemp. In the Friends Provident Trophy, Michael Powell (113 runs at an average of 37.66) has been the best of a sorry bunch with the bat. The bowlers have fared slightly better. Alex Wharf (8 wickets at 23.25 runs apiece) leads the way, plus Andrew Davies and spinners Robert Croft and Dean Cosker have been economical. The injury prone Simon Jones has made three appearances, but still looks some way off being the fast bowler the Aussies had so much respect for in 2005.

Watch out for 19-year-old batsman Ben Wright, who made 40 against the Somerset Sabres and a diligent 61 against Middlesex at Lord's at the end of April.

Alistair Brown has 19 List A hundreds and Chris Schofield has 96 wickets in one-day cricket. Nobody in the Glamorgan line-up has a significant one-day milestone approaching.

Surrey will be without Azhar Mahmood, who was hit on the elbow during a practice session yesterday. He will, however, be fit and available for this week's County Championship clash against Kent at Whitgift School. Scott Newman and Stewart Walters have therefore been added to the squad for tomorrow, which set off, by coach, for South Wales shortly after today's fixture with Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The weather forecast looks quite promising for Cresselly tomorrow, but the word is that the ground there has taken a lot of rain in the last few days, which might put paid to any chance of play. If they do get out there, though, Surrey will be favoured to register a win over the perceived "also rans" in the South Conference.
