GLAMORGAN DRAGONS v SURREY LIONS at Cardiff (CB 40 League), 21 MAY 2010

Nothing really hurts a county more than criticism from a former player. So, with Steve James describing Glamorgan's defeat at the hands of the Unicorns last Sunday as embarrassing, the Dragons will be keen to do well in front of their home crowd, not to mention the television cameras. Indeed, today's innings victory over Gloucestershire suggests they are already treating the loss to the Unicorns as an unfortunate blip.

The story of Glamorgan's opening four matches in this summer's 40League has been their inability, with the ball, to keep their opponents in check. Only Dean Cosker is conceding less than five and a half runs per over. Wickets have also been in short supply - Will Owen leads the way thanks to his solitary appearance, against the Unicorns, bringing figures of 5-49.

The Dragons' undisputed star with the bat has been Mark Cosgrove, who has hit three consecutive one-day half-centuries to average 57.75. Tom Maynard is not far behind him on 55.66, thanks an unbeaten hundred against Lancashire at Old Trafford. But Jamie Dalrymple has lacked fluency and, despite his undoubted promise, Ben Wright is averaging a paltry 13.66.

In addition, all-rounder James Allenby has only come off on one occasion at the top of the order. You cannot help but feel that David Brown or even Robert Croft, who is yet to make a one-day appearance this summer, would be a better bet as pinch-hitter for the Welshmen.

Glamorgan's Tom Maynard goes into this contest with 991 List A career runs.

Surrey have announced a squad of thirteen, which includes Laurie Evans, Tim Linley, Chris Schofield, Chris Tremlett and Stewart Walters. Andre Nel is also named in it even though the South African dislocated the little finger on his right hand during the championship clash with Middlesex at the Oval. Michael Brown (left elbow), Chris Jordan (back) and Stuart Meaker (left ankle) make up the current injury list, while Steven Davies won't be available due to his England Lions call-up for the tour match at Derby.

With no Steven Davies, the visitors will be greatly weakened. That said, Glamorgan will be without James Harris, who is also representing the England Lions. But Surrey's recent one-day visits to the SWALEC haven't been much to write home about, which is why I think the Dragons might just edge this one.

M Cosgrove, R Croft, J Dalrymple (capt), T Maynard, B Wright, G Rees, D Brown, J Allenby, M Wallace (wk), D Cosker and W Owen.
