GLAMORGAN V SURREY at Cardiff (Royal London One-Day Cup), 30 APRIL 2017

So, having assumed that starting the Royal London campaign against Somerset and Glamorgan would be ideal from Surrey's perspective, the two that have made poor starts to the championship season are already P1 W1 in the 50-over stuff while the in form team, i.e. Surrey, have opened their 2017 One-Day Cup account with an embarrassing defeat. Not only did Somerset make the Oval outfit pay for dropping Dean Elgar on five, Elgar and Roelof van der Merwe's stand of 213 smashed the previous List A record for the sixth wicket against Surrey (Martin Speight and Ian Salisbury's 137 for Sussex at Guildford in 1996). Furthermore, Somerset, after slipping to 22-5, romped home with more than six overs to spare.

Glamorgan's batting lacks experience - other than Jacques Rudolph (10,101), Colin Ingram (6,663) and Chris Cooke (1,867), no one on show for the hosts tomorrow has more than 400 List A career runs on their CV. It's a similar story with the ball. New signing Marchant de Lange has 113 one-day scalps at 23.25 apiece, Michael Hogan is clocking 93 at 26.80 and then next in the pecking order is Craig Meschede with 48 wickets. That said, watch out for one of Glamorgan's few homegrown players, 19-year-old seamer Lukas Carey, who impressed on List A debut in the 18-run victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol on Thursday.

Surrey v Glamorgan - List A Records Sheet

Kumar Sangakkara will start needing 60 more to reach 19,000 List A career runs, while Glamorgan's Craig Meschede has 48 one-day wickets.

Stuart Meaker's eight overs for 60, including five wides, against Somerset on Friday must surely give Ravi Rampaul hope of being drafted in for his first appearance of the new season.

Apart from rain, and plenty of it, you mean? Well, ignoring last summer's no result, Surrey have won eight out of the previous ten List A meetings with the Welshmen, including the last two at Cardiff. But, as I say, Glamorgan appear to be desperately short of experience. If they do get on the field of play, expect a Surrey win. Put another way, if Surrey went into Tuesday's clash off the back of two defeats, they're chances of reaching a third successive Lord's final would start to look pretty slim.
