GLOUCESTERSHIRE GLADIATORS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Bristol (FPT), 26 APRIL 2009

The last time these two sides met in one-day cricket, Surrey broke the world record for the highest total in List A cricket. But in recent years the Brown Caps and the Gladiators have traded wins. Of their last four visits to Bristol in List A, Surrey have only tasted victory on one occasion. Curiously, since 1998 every List A meeting between the two at Nevil Road has gone the way of the side winning the toss.

Last week, against Sussex, the Gladiators won the toss, elected to field and ran out comfortable winners by seven wickets thanks to an all-round team performance. With the ball, Jon Lewis and James Franklin proved difficult to get away. Vikram Banerjee cashed in with three wickets. Then, when it came to bat, an unbeaten 122-run stand between Craig Spearman (69*) and Chris Taylor (68*) carried the hosts over the line with 22 balls to spare.

In 2008, Hamish Marshall was Gloucestershire's leading run-maker in one-day cricket with 416 at an average of 37.81, but the key was the Gladiators' ability to bat all the way down to Steve Adshead coming in at number eight. Steve Kirby was their leading wicket-taker last term with 22 victims at 22.13 runs apiece, but, for economy, nobody could beat Alex Gidman's under-rated medium pace. With an economy rate of 4.52, Lewis wasn't too shabby either.

James Benning, with 2,458, needs 42 more runs for 2,500 runs in List A cricket. Jade Dernbach, with 73, needs two more wickets for 75 victims in List A.

Stewart Walters and Andre Nel have been named in the Brown Caps' 13-man squad, but, on paper, appear the likeliest ones to miss out. In Nel's case he is nursing a worrying injury to his right hamstring.

Surrey ended last season winning three out of their last four List A fixtures. With Mark Ramprakash back in action tomorrow, coupled with the arrival of overseas signing Grant Elliott, the Brown Caps should fancy their chances of opening their Friends Provident campaign with a victory.
