HAMPSHIRE ROYALS V SURREY LIONS at the Rose Bowl (CB 40League), 2 MAY 2011

Like Surrey, Hampshire have played just one game in this season's CB 40League and boast a 100% record. The Royals' three-run victory over reigning champions Warwickshire was set up by Johann Myburgh and Neil McKenzie (87 not out from 69 balls) and completed by Simon Jones who held his nerve at the death to finish with four wickets.

In last summer's 40League, opener Jimmy Adams led the way with the bat (496 runs at an average of 49.60), with Michael Carberry, Sean Ervine and Neil McKenzie chipping in on a regular basis. Unfortunately, Carberry will not face up to the county that gave him his first break in the game, owing to a blood clot on his lung that is expected to keep the 30-year-old left-hander out for another fortnight.

In 2010, the main threat in Hampshire's one-day bowling attack was 20-year-old left-arm seamer Chris Wood (18 40League wickets at 20.44 runs apiece). Dominic Cork and Sean Ervine had their moments, but both conceded over six runs per over. In fact, only 20-year-old slow left-armer Danny Briggs went for less than five.

Jade Dernbach has 97 wickets in List A one-day cricket, while Rory Hamilton-Brown is set to make his 50th appearance.

Gareth Batty, who was rested for today's win over Scotland, will return to the fray tomorrow, with Matthew Spriegel almost certain to make way. The only other possible changes depend on whether Matt Dunn and Tom Jewell are preferred to Yasir Arafat or Tim Linley. Looking further ahead, Stuart Meaker and Mark Ramprakash are expected to be in the Surrey squad for Leicestershire's visit to the Kia Oval this week.

I have been telling anyone who will listen that Surrey will win one of the limited-overs competitions this summer. But this match will be a big test of whether my faith is well placed. I've got to say Surrey win, but much will depend on limiting Hampshire to a relatively modest total.
