NOTTINGHAMSHIRE V SURREY at Trent Bridge (FCC1), 26-29 JULY 2005

In May, Surrey's unbeaten run against Nottinghamshire in the championship, which stretched back to September 1992, came to an abrupt and crushing end. Now the Trent Bridge outfit have the opportunity of kicking the Ovalites while they are down. A defeat in this match would end Surrey's hopes of winning the title once and for all. A defeat at the hands of Notts and a similar outcome down at Hove next week against an improving Sussex side and Steve Rixon could well be presiding over Surrey's first relegation season in the long form of the game.

According to his captain Stephen Fleming, who is unavailable due to New Zealand's tour of Zimbabwe, Ryan Sidebottom is in the sort of form that could lead to an England recall. The stats would also appear to back him up. The former Yorkshire left-arm seamer has taken 31 wickets at an average of 22.06 runs apiece so far this campaign. But compare that with his team-mate A.J.Harris's twenty at 21.10 and one soon realises why the Outlaws are on a crest of a wave right now.

Fleming's replacement, Pakistan's Younis Khan, is set to make his championship debut for Notts. He joins a real powerhouse of a batting line-up which includes three batsmen who are currently averaging over over 55 per completed innings - Australia's David Hussey, former favourite with the Oval faithful Darren Bicknell plus Jason Gallian, who has a remarkable f-c record against Surrey.

The best news one can give the visitors is that after having his praises sung by Steve Rixon recently, wicketkeeper Chris Read is out of Nottinghamshire’s eleven with what is described as a badly strained ankle. So, David Alleyne will deputise.

On Saturday and Sunday at Guildford even a blind man could see that Surrey were at a low ebb. It was hardly the sort of preparation the Oval outfit needed prior to facing Nottinghamshire in their own back yard. Looking at Surrey's line up, which shows no Thorpe and no Ormond, I would be lying if I said anything other than I sense another victory for Notts is in the offing.

Martin Bicknell and Scott Newman have recovered from the hamstring strains that kept them out of the defeat against Kent at Guildford, but Mohammad Akram, Jimmy Ormond, Ian Salisbury and Graham Thorpe are missing. So, in comes Tim Murtagh and Jade Dernbach, who will be making his championship debut.

D Bicknell, J Gallian (capt), R Warren, Younis Khan, D Hussey, D Alleyne (wk), M Ealham, G Swann, R Sidebottom, G Smith and A Harris.
