NOTTINGHAMSHIRE V SURREY V KENT at Welbeck (Metro Bank One-Day Cup)
13 AUGUST 2023

The team propping up Group A in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup travel north to take on third.

With Leicestershire and Hampshire looking odds-on to progress to the knockout round, this will not only be Surrey's last chance to kick-start their 50-over campaign, it would also appear to be an ideal opportunity for Nottinghamshire to put one foot in the next phase.

So far the Outlaws have beaten Essex and Leicestershire before losing to Hampshire by 91 runs.

The main concern for Notts, having got three tough games out of the way, seems to be the batting form of skipper Haseeb Hameed, who has managed just 22 runs in this year's competition; not least because only Lyndon James and Ben Martindale are averaging over 30 with the willow.

There's little wrong with the hosts' bowling, though. Dane Paterson has bagged 9 wickets at a meagre average of 13.55, while fellow seamers Tom Loten (17.50) and Brett Hutton (17.83) have six scalps apiece. In terms of spin, Calvin Harrison and Liam Patterson-White complete the picture.

Surrey's inexperienced attack, on the other hand, is leaking runs - at a rate of 7.14 runs an over to be precise; and the solitary point the Oval outfit have notched came courtesy of the abandonment of last weekend's fixture against Middlesex at Radlett.

Surrey v Notts - List A Records Sheet

If he plays - which seems possible given Jordan Clark's absence - 17-year-old seamer Luke Griffiths will be making his List A debut. Ben Foakes is now 2 dismissals shy of 100 in List A cricket. Haseeb Hameed (994) needs six more runs for 1,000 in all List A, while Dane Paterson (146) is four away from a 150th one-day wicket.

Thirteen of the 14-man squad for Friday's game against Kent will be heading to Welbeck, the exception being Jordan Clark who has strained a hamstring.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Kent 11 Aug 2023 The Oval Lost By 87 Runs
Middlesex 5 Aug 2023 Radlett Abandoned
Leicestershire 3 Aug 2023 The Oval Lost By 5 Wickets
Nottinghamshire 23 Aug 2022 Welbeck Lost By 8 Wickets
Gloucestershire 19 Aug 2022 The Oval Lost By 2 Wickets

Given that Cameron Steel is the only Surrey bowler averaging less than 50 in this summer's One-Day Cup, the South Londoners need to go big with the bat to stand any chance of putting the likes of Notts under pressure. Prediction - another disappointing day for the Oval outfit.
