NOTTINGHAMSHIRE V SURREY at Trent Bridge (Metro Bank One-Day Cup)
24 AUGUST 2025

Fourth in Group A plays host to eighth. For Notts (who will be playing their final group game) it's a 'must win', given Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Worcestershire look poised to progress to the knockout phase. Despite a 43-run victory over Derbyshire, the visitors can't now qualify for the quarters, but they'll arrive at Trent Bridge with hopes high fresh from posting their third best total in List A cricket.

Ollie Sykes and Adam Thomas became the 42nd and 43rd players to hit a List A ton for Surrey, as Derbyshire's attack conceded 388-4, not to mention the sixth pair to make hundreds in the same one-day fixture for the South Londoners:

Pairs of Surrey centurions in List A cricket
AD Brown & GP Thorpe v Yorkshire Scarborough 1994
DJ Bicknell & GP Thorpe v Gloucestershire The Oval 1995
AJ Hollioake & MR Ramprakash v Sussex Hove 2002
JGE Benning & AD Brown v Gloucestershire The Oval 2007
SM Davies & KC Sangakkara v Derbyshire Guildford 2015
OFM Sykes & ARG Thomas  v Derbyshire Derby 2025

"One thing we've seen throughout this competition is we've lost too many wickets too early by trying to force the issue too much," said Sykes afterwards. "Today we said ideally no more than three down at 30 overs and we were only two down until the 43rd.

"Me and Adam have played a lot of cricket together, so we know how each other bats and I thought the way he in particular played, after he got to his milestone - the way he took it down was frightening.

"The way we scrapped in general was just superb, every single person got their kit dirty and put something on the line, so it was a great day."

Notts, who have chalked up three victories and a tie from seven, have been indebted to the batting of Jack Haynes (435 Metro Bank runs at an average of 62.14) and Haseeb Hameed, plus, with the ball, all-rounders Joe Pocklington (11 wickets at 27.36) and Robert Lord (11 at 34.45), who, of course, burst on to the scene last summer by taking 5-45 against Surrey at Guildford.

Surrey v Notts - List A Records Sheet

Rory Burns (1,946) is en route to notching up 2,000 List A runs while Ollie Sykes is one away from 500. Turning to the hosts, if they play, Tom Giles, 19, and Travis Holland, also 19, will be making their professional debuts. Brett Hutton (481) and Dane Schadendorf (451) have the landmark of 500 List A career runs in their sights.

With 15 personnel involved in The Hundred along with a plethora of injuries hitting who's left, Surrey have now called on 39 players this summer - the most recent additions being Ralphie Albert, Ari Karvelas and Ollie Hunt, who made their debuts for the Oval outfit in Friday's surprise win at Derby.

If victory over Derbyshire came as a shock, just imagine what it would say about the character of Surrey's almost 3rd XI if they somehow put together back-to-back one-day successes! Prediction - the head says Notts, but we can still dream can't we?
