NOTTINGHAMSHIRE V SURREY at Trent Bridge (Royal London One-Day Cup), 10 AUGUST 2014

If one were to include complete abandonments, this is Surrey's 1,000th List A fixture. Going by the weather forecast, Hurricane Bertha and all, it could well be the Oval outfit's 48th washout in one-day cricket. Should the contest survive the elements, an inexperienced Surrey team will be taking on a Nottinghamshire side chomping at the bit to make up for failing to put last week's T20 quarter-final against Hampshire to bed.

It's worth recalling that no one gave a weakened Surrey team a chance back in 2001, when Scott Newman and Rikki Clarke made their county debuts. The key that day, was the experience of Alistair Brown. Without his rousing 130 the Supporters' coach would have been making its return journey rather sooner and with nothing to celebrate.

Steven Mullaney currently tops both sets of Nottinghamshire's Royal London averages, by dint of being the Outlaws most frugal bowler with 7 wickets at 13.00 runs apiece (James Franklin is also averaging 13.00) and an economy rate of 3.13. In addition to Franklin, Jake Ball and Ajmal Shahzad have proven to be a capable supporting cast.

Although, with the bat, Notts will be without Alex Hales and James Taylor, who, like Jason Roy, are on England Lions duty, Mullaney has made 173 runs at an average of 57.66, Chris Read has 100 runs from two completed innings and the consistent Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels have each contributed a half-century.

Stuart Meaker, with 48, is approaching 50 List A career wickets.

Surrey have named a 13-man squad, with Aneesh Kapil and Jack Winslade being added to the eleven that lost to Sussex on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tom Curran's rehabilitation has received a setback following the 19-year-old's accident, while swimming, which has left him with a fractured elbow.

As I say, the weather could win out. But if they do get on the park it'll be a case of a banged-up and youthful-looking Surrey side on the road against the team currently lying third in Group B. Verdict - Outlaws to capture the spoils.
