SURREY V DERBYSHIRE FALCONS at the Kia Oval (YB40), 11 AUGUST 2013

Sadly there's nothing resting on this encounter, except, perhaps, making a statement ahead of the corresponding championship clash, which starts on the last Thursday of the month.

Apart from the occasions when Shivnarine Chanderpaul has starred with the bat and Mark Footitt with the ball, the Falcons have desperately lacked match-winning performances in this year's Yorkshire Bank 40. Derbyshire's main selection headache ahead of tomorrow's game appears to be whether 21-year-old seam bowling all-rounder Alex Hughes or 19-year-old off-spinner Peter Burgoyne should come in for the absent Jonathan Clare.

If they play, Surrey's George Edwards and Freddie Van den Bergh will be making their List A debuts. Meanwhile,
Derbyshire's David Wainwright goes into tomorrow's contest with 49 List A career wickets.

There's still no indication when, or indeed if JP Duminy will be making his Surrey debut. However, Tom Curran retains his place after recording an early career best 5-34 against Scotland. Curiously, Zafar Ansari, who also registered personal best bowling figures against the Scots, is rested. Gareth Batty, who, some would argue, should be serving his ban now, rather than next weekend, is named as Surrey's skipper. The clever money seems to be on Arun Harinath making his first List A appearance since 2009.

Derbyshire are bringing a near full strength squad to SE11, while it seems likely Surrey will field another experimental eleven. So, I've got to go with the Falcons on this occasion. Showers are forecast in the morning, but they're not expected to last beyond midday.

C Hughes, W Durston, P Borrington, S Chanderpaul, D Redfern, W Madsen (capt), A Hughes, R Johnson (wk), D Wainwright, T Groenewald and M Footitt.
