SURREY V DURHAM at Guildford (LVCC1), 16-19 JULY 2008

The main criticism levelled at Durham is that they rely heavily on their two leading batsmen - Dale Benkenstein (531 championship runs at an average of 59.00 in 2008) and Michael Di Venuto (554 at 46.16). But now the Riversiders have a third prized scalp in their line-up (trust him to make his first appearance of the season at the batsmen's paradise that is Guildford) in Shivnarine Chanderpaul. In truth, though, nobody else has done anything with the bat so far this season, unless you count Liam Plunkett's 120 runs for once out.

Yes, it is with the ball that Durham have been a forced to be reckoned with this term. Steve Harmison leads the way with 34 championship scalps at 23.26 runs apiece, though Callum Thorp (23 wickets at 18.69) has been in inspired form; no more so than in the Riversiders' eight-wicket victory at Headingley, when he took 5-71 in the second innings. Graham Onions has also returned some decent figures, but he has made just one 4-day appearance since mid-May, against Somerset at Taunton where he took 1-82 in twenty overs. With Ben Harmison and Plunkett completing the attack, there is plenty for opposition batsmen to think about.

Usman Afzaal is poised to make his 200th first-class appearance, Chris Schofield has 195 f-c wickets, oh and Mark Ramprakash needs one more hundred for a hundred f-c hundreds. For Durham, Liam Plunkett goes into this match needing 7 wickets to reach 200 f-c career wickets.

Pedro Collins (side strain) joins Mark Butcher (knee) and James Benning (back) on the injury list, so James Ormond has been added to the Brown Caps' line-up for this game. However, if Surrey decide to replace seam with spin, Chris Schofield and Murtaza Hussain are also named in the 13-man squad.

Draw. Well it's Guildford and the weather forecast for Thursday and Friday suggests that some time will be lost from the game. Also, don't forget, championship matches are already 24 overs shorter this year.
