Seventh plays host to fifth.
Surrey's start to the 2026 campaign has seen them earn draws on two
fairly benign pitches, while Essex, who got off the mark with a
thumping victory over Hampshire, go into this clash on the back of
losses to Somerset (by 10 wickets) and Warwickshire (by 41 runs).
Matt Critchley (247
championship runs at 49.40) has enjoyed a productive start to the
season with the bat, as has Simon Harmer (171 ar 42.75), but a lack
of runs from elsewhere must be a concern for Essex at this stage.
With the ball, however, Sam
Cook (14 wickets at 18.85 runs apiece), Jamie Porter (11 at 19.81)
and Shane Snater (10 at 17.50) are all into their stride.
Five of Surrey's batters are
currently averaging over 65 in the Champo - Clark (71.00), Foakes
(127.50), Lawrence (65.66), Pope (74.00) and Smith (99.00), but no
one is yet to collect more than 5 wickets.

Sean Abbott (2,991), Gus Atkinson (947)
Jordan Clark (3,959) and Matt Fisher (961) are all eyeing up
first-class career runs landmarks, while Atkinson (142) and Tom
Lawes (94) are approaching 150 and 100 f-c victims with the ball.
For Essex, Charlie Allison (908) is closing in on his 1,000th run in
first-class cricket, while Sam Cook (342) is 8 wickets away from a
350th.
For the first time this season Gus Atkinson is named in the Surrey
squad, but Cam Steel and Dan Worrall remain sidelined by injury.

The next four days look set to be blessed with very pleasant weather
and Surrey's home record in the Champo in recent years ought to be
an advantage against a team that's licking wounds following
back-to-back defeats. The big question is how the pitch will behave.
If there's more in it for the bowlers than in the Leicestershire
game, a first victory this term for the hosts beckons.
