SURREY V GLAMORGAN at the Brit Oval (LVCC2), 30 AUG - 2 SEP 2006

If Surrey were to take a victory from this match it would as good as ensure that the Brown Caps will be playing top flight championship cricket in 2007. So, the good news is that the Oval outfit have lost just one of their last twenty County Championship encounters with the Welshmen. The bad news is that the weather forecast for the next four days is none too promising, and the umpires are called Evans and Jones!

With 19-year-old fast bowler Huw Waters back fit again, New Zealand's James Franklin turning in impressive figures and off-spinner Robert Croft (60 championship wickets at 27.41 runs apiece) having his best season since 1996 - when he collected 67 championship victims - tomorrow's visitors possess an attack that could pose Surrey more problems than they might otherwise expect from a team lying six places below them in the Division Two table.

With the bat so much appears to rest on the shoulders of Mark Cosgrove - who will be making his last appearance of the summer for Glamorgan before returning to Australia - and Michael Powell. Though Powell has racked up 1,208 championship runs at an average of 57.52 this term, he has only gone past fifty on six occasions in 13 outings. Wicketkeeper Mark Wallace has had his moments, and usually does well against Surrey, but now is the time Richard Grant, David Hemp and Ryan Watkins showed the Welsh supporters just what they are made of.

Mark Butcher needs three runs for a thousand for the season in first-class cricket - something the Surrey skipper has not managed for the last two years due to injury - and Jonathan Batty requires 38 more runs to achieve it for the first time in his career after getting to within touching distance in each of the last four summers. For Glamorgan, Mark Wallace will be making his 100th first-class appearance. Also, nobody has ever scored hundreds in six consecutive matches for Surrey. So, come on Ramps!

Surrey seem likely to go into the match with three spinners - Doshi, Salisbury and Schofield. Assuming they do, Neil Saker and Stewart Walters are probably at the front of the queue in terms of being benched; which seems a shame given that the finger injury to James Benning and Rikki Clarke's England call-up had opened up a couple of gaps in the Brown Caps' line-up.

Have you seen the weather forecast? If rain does take a hold, this game will be a certain draw. If not, I would be flabbergasted if Glamorgan pulled off win, given that they have only beaten Surrey once in twenty championship clashes. Mind you, the Brown Caps have not won the last five four-day games in which Allan Jones has stood as one of the umpires.

M Cosgrove, R Watkins, D Hemp, M Powell, R Grant, J Franklin, M Wallace (wk), R Croft (capt), D Harrison, D Cosker and H Waters.

Jeff Evans and Allan Jones.
