Sixth entertain seventh. While both sides aren't mathematically safe, it would take an extraordinary turn of events for Surrey and Glamorgan to find themselves in Division Two next summer. Having said that, neither have been convincing in recent weeks. Since the pair met last Surrey have lost to Notts, scraped a one-wicket victory over Yorkshire and drawn away to Essex and Sussex. Meanwhile, Glamorgan have suffered three defeats out of four starting with a 42-run setback at Leicester which could result in the Foxes losing all of the points they gained from that game for breaching the ECB's regulations on pitch preparation. If that happens, Leicestershire, along with Hampshire, would appear odds-on in terms of the drop.

The most worrying facet of Glamorgan's game must surely be the batting, especially after being skittled out for 69 and 65 by Warwickshire last week. Just three batters are currently averaging over thirty in the County Championship - Ben Kellaway (575 runs at 35.93), Kiran Carlson (778 at 35.36) and Colin Ingram (628 at 31.40).

In the absence of overseas seamer Ryan Hadley and rising star Tom Norton (injured back), who did the damage in the first dig when Glamorgan beat Surrey by 7 wickets at Cardiff, the Welshmen have struggled to bowl sides out. But Pakistan's Mir Hamza (8 championship wickets at 27.87) is currently on board and Timm van der Gugten (35 at 28.82) remains consistent. If the strip for this clash takes spin don't rule out Kellaway and Mason Crane (30 at 34.90) having a say.

Ben Foakes (9,819) is eyeing up 10,000 first-class career runs, Tom Lawes (923) one thousand, Dan Lawrence (8,994) nine thousand and Mahipal Lomror (3,928) four thousand. Meanwhile, of the Glamorgan contingent, Chris Cooke (8,852) is approaching 9,000 f-c runs and Mir Hamza (954) his 1,000th.

Dan Lawrence returns from Test match duty, but there's no Jamie Smith (dislocated ring finger and cracked thumb). Gus Atkinson and Will Jacks are in England's white-ball squad for the internationals against Sri Lanka, as is Jamie Overton (who is white-ball only these days). All three of the hosts' overseas signings are named in the South Londoners' line-up, although only two will be permitted to play.

Since 2006, Surrey have just one victory to show for 12 championship meetings with Glamorgan - the only victory coming at Colwyn Bay in 2014. The weather forecast for this week suggests we might lose a bit of time to rain on days one and three, otherwise expect it to be cloudy but dry. If the hosts can't overcome a side that has just been bowled out twice for less than 70 questions will need to be asked. Prediction - a win for Surrey.
