SURREY V GLOUCESTERSHIRE at the Kia Oval (Royal One-Day London Cup)
19 AUGUST 2022

Having received a savage education from Middlesex and Sussex, Surrey’s fortunes turned the corner against Somerset thanks to Tom Lawes' brilliant opening spell with the ball, which backed up his and Nico Reider and Sheridon Gumbs' efforts with the bat.

Following a slow start to the Royal London, Gloucestershire enjoyed back-to-back victories over Somerset, Notts and Durham, but defeat to Leicestershire in their last match leaves the Bristolians on the same number of points as Surrey.

So, could whoever wins this one make a late bid for a quarter-final berth? Realistically, no.

James Taylor - Gloucestershire's skipper and leg-spinning all-rounder - has been a model of consistency, averaging 60.40 with the bat and 24.50 with the ball in this year’s domestic 50-over tournament.

James Bracey (60.40) and Marcus Harris (44.33) have also been in the runs, with Chris Dent, Zafar Gohar, Ollie Price and Ben Wells all chipping in. Dent, however, looks set to miss the trip to SE11 due to an ankle injury.

Paul van Meekeren has bagged 10 Royal London wickets (average 33.70) for the Bristolians, while slow left-armers Tom Smith (34.62) and Zafar Gohar (36.62) have eight apiece.

Surrey v Gloucestershire - List A Records Sheet

Gloucestershire's James Bracey (900) and Marcus Harris (1,887) are in with outside chances of passing 1,000 and 2,000 List A career runs respectively. If they play, Ajeet Dale and Will Naish will be making their List A debuts; likewise Surrey's Tim Lloyd.

Surrey have named the same squad, plus Cameron Steel, who returns after retiring hurt with concussion during the defeat to Middlesex at Radlett.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Somerset 17 Aug 2022 The Oval Won By 43 Runs (D/L)
Sussex 14 Aug 2022 Hove Lost By 216 Runs
Middlesex 10 Aug 2022 Radlett Lost By 102 Runs
Warwickshire 7 Aug 2022 The Oval Match Tied
Durham 4 Aug 2022 Gosforth Won By 9 Wickets

Despite Wednesday's victory over a depleted Somerset and Gloucestershire going off the boil against Group A leaders Leicestershire, something tells me the Bristolians have the batting to out-do Surrey. The key, as is often the case, will therefore be early wickets.

B.Charlesworth, B.Wells, M.Harris, J.Bracey (wk), O.Price, J.Taylor (capt), Zafar Gohar, T.Price, T.Smith, P.van Meekeren and J.Warner.

Ben Debenham and Richard Kettleborough.
