SURREY V HAMPSHIRE at the Brit Oval (FCC1), 24-27 AUGUST 2005

History is on Surrey's side, although it appears far less certain the weather will be.

In the championship, the Ovalites have won their last nine clashes with the Rose Bowl outfit. But since Nic Pothas and Andy Bichel's first innings alliance of 257 against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham, Hampshire's championship season has perked up again.

The pair turned round a score of 81-7 and Shaun Udal's men ran out the eventual 178-run winners. More recently Hampshire have been more than a match for title contenders Kent, against whom Ervine made fifties in both innings as opener and Bichel and Mascarenhas were among the wickets.

Though Hampshire have rarely been short of runs, no batsman has yet scored a big hundred - Pothas's 139 at Cheltenham is the highest. Worryingly, the man who took the game away from Surrey in the C&G Trophy quarter-final, Shane Watson, is yet to reach three figures and John Crawley is only averaging 33.95 in the championship despite having a first-class career average of 46.11.

Taking the summer as a whole, the main dangers with the ball have been Shane Warne and Chris Tremlett, both of whom are on international duty. However, if Tremlett is not selected for the Fourth Test at Trent Bridge he may well hot foot it to SE11 to play as a substitute. Notwithstanding the absence of these two, tomorrow's visitors appear to be better off for bowling than their opponents.

Those with approaching milestones include Alistair Brown, who is ten runs away from notching up 13,000 first-class runs for Surrey. In all f-c cricket Jon Batty currently has 4,936 runs, Scott Newman has 2,889, Mark Ramprakash has 25,918 and Graham Thorpe has 21,937.

With heavy showers forecast for days two and four, the chance of a positive result appears to be minimal. But if Surrey do pick Mohammad Akram and he bowls anything like he did against Gloucestershire last week, then Hampshire must fancy themselves to score maximum batting points, especially with an 8, 9 and 10 of Mascarenhas, Bichel and Udal. Mind you, they have not managed more than 350 against the Oval outfit since 1996.

With Bicknell, Clarke and Ormond crocked, still, Surrey name an unchanged side from the one that drew with Gloucestershire.

M Brown, S Ervine, J Crawley, S Watson, J McLean, N Pothas (wk), G Lamb, D Mascarenhas, A Bichel, S Udal (capt) and J Bruce.
