SURREY V HAMPSHIRE at the Kia Oval (RCC)
7-10 JUNE 2026

Seventh plays host to bottom. For all of Surrey's inconsistency in this season's Champo, spare a thought for Hampshire, who, along with Leicestershire, already appear to be facing relegation following defeats at the hands of Glamorgan, Somerset and home and away to Essex.

The hosts' recent loss to Yorkshire was only their second defeat by an innings in 48 red-ball outings, so, on paper at least, this game represents an opportunity for the South Londoners to get their four-day campaign back on track.

A shortage of runs has really hampered Hampshire. Jake Lehmann (559 in the championship at an average of 62.11) and skipper Ben Brown (463 at 46.30) have lacked support in that department. Fletcha Middleton (8.50) and Toby Albert (17.25) seem unable to buy a run, plus the form of the usually reliable Liam Dawson (7.42) has forced him to retire from red-ball cricket.

Dawson was also averaging 53.57 with the ball, but Kyle Abbott (26 wickets at 18.23) remains one of the most consistent performers in county cricket, alongside Sonny Baker (19 at 21.68). Seamers James Fuller and South African Delano Potgieter are both available again for the trip to SE11.

Surrey v Hampshire - First-Class Records Sheet

If he plays, Reece Topley will be making his 50th f-c appearance. Jordan Clark will start with 294 first-class career wickets. With the bat, Matt Fisher (992 runs) and Ollie Pope (8,974) are eyeing up landmarks. Turning to Hampshire, 17-year-old Manny Lumsden looks to be on the verge of making his f-c debut. Fletcha Middleton will start with 1,977 first-class career runs.

James Taylor has returned from his loan spell with Kent, which saw the 25-year-old seamer take 12 wickets at 13.08. Ben Foakes remains sidelined. Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall will also sit out this one. But Sam Curran and Will Jacks are named in Surrey's red ball squad for the first time this summer; and Matt Fisher has been released to play by the England management. Ollie Pope looks set to keep wicket.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Yorkshire 15-18 May 2026 Headingley Lost By An Inns & 127 Runs
Nottinghamshire 8-11 May 2026 Trent Bridge Match Drawn
Sussex 1-4 May 2026 The Oval Won By 8 Wickets
Essex 24-27 Apr 2026 The Oval Match Drawn
Leicestershire 10-13 Apr 2026 The Oval Match Drawn

Surrey haven't lost a championship match to Hampshire at the Oval since the end of 2008, when the hosts took a punt on Shoaib Akhtar. Since then the record reads 5 wins and 5 draws. But as we have seen the South Londoners have struggled to take wickets this summer. Other than Dan Worrall's 8 at 22,50 runs apiece in 2 outings, Matt Fisher is averaging 36.80 and Jordan Clark 37.18. Judging by the weather forecast, rain will pose an even bigger barrier to victory. Days 2, 3 and 4 look very wet. Prediction - draw.

T.Albert, N.Gubbins, F.Middleton, J.Lehmann, T.Prest, B.Brown (capt, wk), F.Organ, D.Potgeiter, J.Fuller, K.Abbott and S.Baker.
