SURREY LIONS V HAMPSHIRE ROYALS at Whitgift School (CB 40League), 22 MAY 2011

Every year since 2005 Hampshire have avoided losing more matches than they have won in the Clydesdale Bank 40 and its predecessors. But the start to the Royals' 2011 campaign looks likely to reverse that trend. Hampshire's only victory to date came in their curtain-raiser against Warwickshire. Even then, the Rose Bowl outfit scrapped home by three runs thanks to Neil McKenzie's blistering 87 not out off 69 balls.

To date, only McKenzie, Liam Dawson and Benny Howell can point to any real form with the bat in the CB40. But it would be wrong for Surrey to under-estimate Jimmy Adams, who is averaging 11.66, Dimitri Mascarenhas, 10.50, and Sean Ervine, who averages a paltry 8.00 with the willow.

With the ball, while Simon Jones has proved to be something of a partnership breaker, only Mascarenhas has exercised any control. The former Royals captain is the only man conceding less than 4.98 runs per over in the CB40. His successor, Dominic Cork is currently nursing a record of one wicket for 146 at an economy rate of 5.40, on top of a batting average of three. Ouch!

Matthew Spriegel goes into tomorrow's encounter with 933 List A one-day career runs.

Stuart Meaker is suffering from a pulled hamstring and Jade Dernbach is on England Lions duty, so there will be at least two changes to the Surrey side that beat Scotland by 48 runs last weekend. Tom Jewell, Chris Jordan and Tim Linley are lining up to take their chance. But, somewhat surprisingly, Kevin Pietersen is not set to line-up against his former employers.

I never thought I would be predicting a CB40 "double" over Hampshire, but the momentum is most definitely with Surrey going into this game, which will be the Lions' last the Clydesdale Bank for eight weeks. That's the madness of the domestic fixture list for you. Anyway, it would be superb if Rory Hamilton-Brown's men could register their best start to a one-day campaign since 2003.

B Howell, J Myburgh, J Vince, N McKenzie, S Ervine, L Dawson, D Mascarenhas, D Cork (capt), M Bates (wk), D Briggs and S Jones.

Richard Kettleborough and Graham Lloyd.
