SURREY V HAMPSHIRE ROYALS at the Kia Oval (YB40), 6 MAY 2013

Having thumped Essex in the YB40 curtain-raiser at Chelmsford, the reigning champions were made to work somewhat harder by Scotland today. Nevertheless, the Hampshire Royals will go into tomorrow's clash at the Kia Oval as firm favourites. The last contest between these two sides cemented a semi-final berth for one and ended the hopes of the other retaining their crown. That game apart, the South Londoners have enjoyed this fixture in recent years - of the last 15 List A meetings, Surrey have won nine to Hampshire's two, while four have succumbed to the weather. With the hottest day of the year being forecast for tomorrow, we can rule out the latter on this occasion.

If they have a weakness, Hampshire are a little short of quality with the ball. Having said that, Sean Ervine and Hamza Riazuddin have applied the brakes to great effect in their two YB40 outings to date. If left-armers Chris Wood and Danny Briggs could add that string to their bow, the Royals would be confident of backing up a batting corps that already includes four men with YB40 half-centuries under the belts; namely James Vince, Michael Carberry, Liam Dawson and skipper Jimmy Adams.

Gary Wilson is set to make his 100th List A career appearance, while Gareth Batty needs just one more wicket for 200 one-day career scalps.

Chris Adams has freshened up the Surrey squad. In come Zafar Ansari, Tom Curran, Tom Jewell, Gary Keedy, Jon Lewis and Jason Roy, so expect plenty of changes.

It's family fun day at the Kia Oval tomorrow. But who do I think will have fun on the pitch? It has to be Hampshire. The Royals have opened their YB40 account with two victories, while Surrey must come to terms with losing two key one-day players in Matthew Spriegel and Rory Hamilton-Brown. That said, it's a case of Opportunity Knocks for the likes of Curran, Jewell and Roy.
