SURREY V HAMPSHIRE at Guildford (Metro Bank One-Day Cup)
20 AUGUST 2023

The side propping up Group A plays host to their second-placed neighbours, Hampshire, who need just one more victory to add to the five they've already notched up in the Metro Bank to be certain of progression to the knockout phase. The manner of Surrey's defeat to Lancashire in the same surroundings on Thursday suggests Nick Gubbins' men may not even break sweat.

Hampshire's batting has been dominated by Gubbins (360 Metro Bank runs at an average of 60.00) - who is skippering in James Vince's absence - Fletcha Middleton (278 at 46.33), who looked every inch a future England batter when Hampshire travelled to the Oval at the start of the season, and Tom Prest (225 at 37.50). 19-year-old Joseph Eckland (45.50) and 21-year-old Toby Albert (32.00) have also grabbed their opportunities with the bat when they've come along.

The Ageas Bowl outfit also boast five bowlers averaging 24 or less in List A this year; albeit two of them, Mason Crane and Brad Wheal, have struck when not required in The Hundred. Ian Holland (9 Metro Bank scalps at 17.44 runs apiece) has been the stand-out operator, but watch out for 17-year-old Eddie Jack (who has 7 wickets) and fellow seamer Scott Currie (who has taken 8 in this summer's One-Day Cup).

Surrey v Hampshire - List A Records Sheet

If he plays, Tom Ealham will be making his county debut. Ben Geddes (487) and Cameron Steel (488) are closing in on 500 List A career runs.

Nineteen-year-old all-rounder Tom Ealham (son of Mark and grandson of Alan, both Kent stalwarts) comes in for Tom Lawes, who has been recalled by the Oval Invincibles. By way of a reminder, Jordan Clark (hamstring), Matt Dunn (hamstring), Ben Foakes (ankle) and Yousef Majid (hamstring) are all sidelined.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Lancashire 17 Aug 2023 Guildford Lost By 10 Wickets
Yorkshire 15 Aug 2023 York Lost By 1 Wicket
Nottinghamshire 13 Aug 2023 Welbeck Won By 3 Runs (D/L)
Kent 11 Aug 2023 The Oval Lost By 87 Runs
Middlesex 5 Aug 2023 Radlett Abandoned

Given that Surrey have lost 11 out of their last 14 in List A cricket, most of them heavily and most after batting first, it would take an ultimate optimist to predict anything other than a win for Hampshire. It's just a shame that the fight shown by the Oval outfit at Welbeck and York disappeared in less than 60 overs when Lancashire rolled into Guildford this week.

F.Middleton, N.Gubbins (capt), T.Prest, B.Brown (wk), A.Donald, J.Eckland, F.Organ, I.Holland, K.Barker, S.Currie and E.Jack.
