SURREY V KENT at Guildford (FCC1), 20-23 JULY 2005

The last time Surrey and Kent met each other at Guildford the hop county won after being asked to follow-on thanks to Carl Hooper's second innings 131. That proved to be more than the entire Surrey line-up could muster in their second dig, in which they were bowled out for 76 with Darren Bicknell top-scoring with 29. Since then Surrey have had very much the upper hand over their neighbours, although more than a handful of matches have ended in draws.

The hosts will be looking to get back to winning ways after falling short of their expectations against Gloucestershire at Bristol, where, had the game gone to five days - as the pitch was made to do - the Ovalites would surely have beaten the bottom but one west countrymen.

Kent only have five batsmen to speak of, however all four are in a rich vein of form and are currently averaging over fifty in the County Championship. Top of the pack are Robert Key (856 runs at an average of 61.14, including three centuries) and Martin van Jaarsveld (894 at 59.60 and four hundreds). Walker and Stevens provide more than capable support, but despite making five half-centuries captain David Fulton has struggled to assert himself, as have both of Kent's South African stars.

With the ball, Amjad Khan has, to the surprise of some, led the way with 38 championship wickets at an average of 21.50. He has an able support cast of Andrew Hall, Simon Cook and spinner Min Patel. Stevens has also chipped in on occasions, but with Martin Saggers struggling the hop county's attack has a very different look about it this summer.

The man Surrey will be fearing most will be Rob Key, who has a career batting average of 61.06 against the Oval outfit. On the other side of the coin Darren Stevens averages just 16.16. The wickets Min Patel has collected off Surrey over the years have cost 52.09 runs apiece, though that is nothing as compared to Simon Cook's 5 wickets at 72.80.

I have to be honest. Kent have really surprised me this summer. Rather than propping up the Division One table (which is where I thought they would be), they are leading it; albeit the hop county has played one game more than its closest rivals. I cannot help but feel that the presence of Robert Key and the re-emergence of Darren Stevens have been a significant factor. If Surrey can dispose of both of them cheaply then I think the hosts will romp to victory. But I hope you noticed that I began the last sentence with the word "If".

Surrey will have to do without Martin Bicknell and Scott Newman, both of whom have pulled hamstrings, and Mark Butcher of course. So, the fact that Graham Thorpe is unexpectedly part of the Surrey set-up is a welcome bonus for the Ovalites. That said the batting has not been their main concern this summer.

D Fulton (capt), R Key, M van Jaarsveld, D Stevens, A Hall, M Walker, J Kemp, N J O'Brien (wk), M Patel, S Cook and A Khan.
