SURREY V LANCASHIRE at Guildford (Metro Bank One-Day Cup)
17 AUGUST 2023

Eighth (out of nine) in Group A plays host to sixth, in what will be the first List A meeting between Surrey and Lancashire in ten years.

Both sides have endured a rocky road to this point in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup - so much so that even the winner of this clash will need a miracle if they're going to see anything of the knockout phase, having scored just a single victory apiece (Surrey over Notts at Welbeck, by three runs, with Lancashire's coming at Kent's expense, by 125 runs at Blackpool).

Josh Bohannon (178 runs at 44.50), who made 105 to help gun down the the Spitfires, is a whisker in front of Dane Vilas (174 at 43.50) and skipper Keaton Jennings (171 at 42.75) in terms of Lancashire's leading List A run-makers this term.

The stand-out bowler, seamer Jack Blatherwick (9 Metro Bank wickets at 21.66 apiece), has been supported ably by George Balderson (5 at 20.80), Will Williams (24.80) and 22-year-old slow left-armer Jack Morley (31.60).

Alongside Morley, all-rounder Thomas Aspinwall, 19, and batter Matty Hurst, also 19, are those currently getting to see rare first team action while Lancashire's cream is off playing in The Hundred.

Surrey v Lancashire - List A Records Sheet

Three players will start this contest with 500 List A career runs as a target - Ben Geddes (480), Cameron Steel (488) and Lancashire's George Balderson (385) - while Keaton Jennings (2,965) is closing in on 3,000. If Josh Boyden and Harry Singh get the nod for the visitors, they'll be making be their List A debuts.

Tom Lawes comes into the Surrey squad after being released to play by the Oval Invincibles, but Jordan Clark (hamstring), Matt Dunn (hamstring), Ben Foakes (ankle) and Yousef Majid (hamstring) are all ruled out due to injury.

The record of sides batting second in List A matches at Guildford (10 wins out of the last 13) suggests it could all come down to the toss. Both teams have blown hot and cold in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, but as Surrey have shown no small amount of fight in recent outings maybe they have the edge.
