SURREY V LEICESTERSHIRE at Guildford (Royal One-Day London Cup)
2 AUGUST 2022

Last season's semi-finalists play host to Leicestershire, who finished fourth in Surrey's Royal London group last term and were one of just three sides to triumph over the Oval outfit in 50-over cricket in 2021 (the other two being the eventual finalists Durham and Glamorgan).

However, with Surrey being shorn of 13 players due to The Hundred - the most from any one county - it's the Foxes who will start this game as firm favourites.

In contrast, Leicestershire are missing just 4 owing to you know what - namely Colin Ackermann, Rehan Ahmed, Ben Mike and Callum Parkinson.

Last summer, it was Lewis Hill (322 Royal London runs at an average of 46.00) and Rishi Patel (319 at 45.57) who led the way with the bat for the Foxes, who limbered up for this clash by beating Staffordshire with 8 balls to spare last Sunday, in a match reduced to 29 overs per side.

With the ball, Leicestershire have brought South Africa's Beuran Hendricks and Wiaan Mulder on board, to augment the experience of Chris Wright and off-spinner Aaron Lilley.

Surrey v Leicestershire - List A Records Sheet

Surrey could hand List A debuts to as many as five - Nathan Barnwell, Josh Blake, Tom Lawes, Yousef Majid and Amar Virdi. Ryan Patel, who seems to enjoy playing at Guildford, is 57 runs shy of 500 List A career runs. Meanwhile, Leicestershire's Lewis Hill looks set to make his 50th List A appearance.

Rory Burns, cleared to play in the Royal London for Surrey (rather than for the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred), is a notable absentee, which means the hosts look set to field a side containing just 5 players with more than four List A appearances under their belts. Conor McKerr and Cameron Steel, with 16 previous outings apiece, head the list in terms of experience.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Durham 17 Aug 2021 Riverside Lost By 5 Wickets
Gloucestershire 15 Aug 2021 The Oval Won By 5 Wickets
Derbyshire 12 Aug 2021 Derby Won By 8 Wickets
Warwickshire 10 Aug 2021 The Oval Won By 7 Wickets
Leicestershire 7 Aug 2021 Leicester Lost By 1 Run (D/L)

It will be interesting to see the extent to which the likes of Geddes, Lawes, McKerr, Patel, Reifer and Steel can paper over the gaps created by The Hundred. But let's be frank, if this Surrey side can be beaten by Buckinghamshire with six overs to spare, one can't really envisage them overcoming an infinitely more experienced Foxes line-up. Prediction - a win for Leicestershire.

N.Welch, R.Patel, L.Kimber, L.Hill (capt), W.Mulder, A.Lilley, H.Swindells (wk), S.Steel, T.Scriven, C.Wright and B.Hendricks.
