SURREY V
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE OUTLAWS at Guildford (CB40), 15 JULY 2012
Other than the T20
semi-final in 2006, this is the first one-day meeting between these
two sides since 2001. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, Rikki Clarke and Scott Newman both made their first
team debuts at Trent Bridge eleven years ago, in a game that was decided by one
of the most entertaining one-day hundreds you could ever wish to
see, courtesy of Alistair Brown.
Although it's been a traumatic
season for Surrey, the Oval outfit are unbeaten in the Clydesdale
Bank 40, whereas Nottinghamshire have two wins and two losses to
show from their four outings. But, more recently, the Outlaws have
advanced to the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 by dint of
losing just one of their group matches. Surrey lost seven.
Adam Voges has been Notts'
standout performer in limited-overs cricket this season. The
32-year-old Western Australian has made 121 runs from one completed
innings in the CB40 and 176 runs at an average of 58.66 in T20
cricket. But James Taylor has been the most prolific - his unbeaten
115 against Hampshire in the CB40 game at the Ageus Bowl was just 77
balls in the making. With Michael Lumb and Alex Hales up first, not
to mention Samit Patel waiting in the wings, the Outlaws have the
best batting line-up of the seven teams in Group B.
If Nottinghamshire have a
weakness, though, it's their bowling. In the CB40, Steven Mullaney
and Samit Patel have been economical, without really threatening to
take wickets. Darren Pattinson has six scalps, at an average of
17.16, from two starts, and is named in the Outlaws' 13-man squad,
as is 21-year-old seamer Jake Ball, who impressed when taking 3-38
against Somerset.

Sorry, I can't see any. But, given the weather
forecast for tonight and tomorrow, you may be interested to know
that there has never been a one-day game at Guildford abandoned
without a ball being bowled. There has, however, been one no result,
when Surrey played host to Sussex in 1984.
Rory Hamilton-Brown is now thought unlikely to play again this season,
so Gareth Batty takes charge for the first time in this year's CB40.
Kevin Pietersen and Chris Tremlett aren't named in Surrey's 13-man
squad. Jade Dernbach is still recovering from a side strain, so Jon
Lewis, Stuart Meaker and Zander de Bruyn will comprise the seam
attack. Needless to say, the hosts are blessed with a plethora of spin
options.

If we get any play,
Nottinghamshire will win. What, no discussion? I'll tell you for why -
the Guildford factor. Surrey have lost four of their last five
one-day fixtures at Woodbridge Road. Furthermore they've only won 15
out of 36 overall. There is some hope, however, in terms of the
toss. Five of the last six one-day games at Guildford have gone to
the side batting second.
