SURREY BROWN CAPS V SOMERSET SABRES at the Brit Oval (Pro40 Division 2), 11 SEPTEMBER 2007

Somerset are one of the more useful sides in Division Two and, as is the case for Surrey, a win tomorrow night would leave them very handily placed in terms of promotion going into this weekend's last round of matches. The good news for the Brown Caps is that they have won six out of the last seven floodlit List A matches to be played at the Oval. The bad news is that they have only beaten the Sabres once in 12 one-day clashes stretching back to May 1998.

Almost all of Somerset's top order have scored at more than a run a ball in the NatWest Pro40 League this year. Unsurprisingly, Ian Blackwell has been the fastest run-getter. James Hildreth, Justin Langer (708 runs at an average of 59.00 in List A cricket) and Marcus Trescothick are all averaging over forty in the Pro40. The Sabres have not really missed Cameron White. Neil McKenzie has come in and Somerset have won all three of the 40-over matches in which the 31-year-old South African has appeared. Their wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter is no mug either and, at nineteen years of age, is one of the best youngsters to emerge this season.

Ian Blackwell, Peter Trego (18 wickets at 26.27 runs apiece in List A cricket) and Charl Willoughby have been the core of the Sabres' one-day attack this summer. Steffan Jones has not always produced the goods, but in recent weeks Andy Caddick has been in evidence more, taking 5-49 against Durham at Taunton and 3-40 when Leicestershire visited the County Ground.

Mohammad Akram has 148 wickets in List A cricket.

Whatever the result tomorrow night, it will be bucking a trend. I was amazed to learn that Surrey have such a good record at home in day/night matches. But their one-day record against Somerset is woeful. Also, the Sabres are looking very strong. Something tells me that the Brown Caps' unbeaten run will not continue.
