SURREY LIONS v SOMERSET SABRES at the Brit Oval (CB 40League), 25 JULY 2010

This has all the makings of an enthralling clash; especially the contest within a contest between Craig Kieswetter and Steven Davies, both of whom are breathing down the neck of England's first choice stumper, Matt Prior. Each of these two teams have so far gone unbeaten in this year's 40League. However, only one could have the possible distraction of a Twenty20 quarter-final tie to prepare for.

In just five CB40L matches, two batsmen have already made hundreds for Somerset this season - James Hildreth and Zander de Bruyn. But ahead of them in the order are three of the biggest hitters in county cricket - Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter and all-rounder Peter Trego. With the ball, Alfonso Thomas has been really impressive in the 40League - taking 12 wickets at an average of 12.75 - while in their solitary appearances to date both Mark Turner and slow left-armer Murali Kartik have kept a tight rein on the scoring rate.

Gareth Batty is four away from 2,000 List A career runs. Of the Somerset line-up, James Hildreth, with 2,944, is closing in on 3,000 runs in List A cricket.

Despite averaging 75.00 with the bat in one-day cricket against the Cidermen, Usman Afzaal misses out. So there will be at least one change to the side that beat Northants by an innings this week. Into the squad come Jade Dernbach, Jason Roy, Chris Schofield and Gary Wilson. If fit, Dernbach will be hard to overlook. If the pitch is likely to take spin, expect Stuart Meaker or Andre Nel to make way for Schofield. But if Roy plays, Tommy Lancefield may well be counting himself unlucky.

Beating Somerset home and away in the FPt20 this season was an achievement in itself. To be honest, I don't see Surrey making it a hat-trick of victories against them. The Sabres are strong in every department. They've also got some history on their side - Somerset have won 12 out of their last 13 List A clashes against the Oval outfit. Hoping I am wrong, Sabres to win.
