SURREY V SOMERSET at the Kia Oval (Royal London One-Day Cup), 8 JUNE 2016

While Surrey were losing their Royal London One-Day Cup opener by one wicket at Beckenham, Somerset were winning theirs by the same margin, against Gloucestershire at Taunton. But for Johann Myburgh (81) and James Hildreth's (48) 87-run alliance and an unbeaten last wicket partnership of 65 in eight overs between Jamie Overton (40 not out off 32 balls) and Tim Groenewald (34*), Somerset would have finished a distant second to the defending champions last Sunday.

The decision to rest Jamie Overton for tomorrow's clash at the Oval is curious, to say the least. But if Surrey are to prevent Somerset making it two wins in two, they'll need to tame the other Overton - Craig Overton, who was the leading wicket-taker for the Cidermen in last year's Royal London One-Day Cup with 12 scalps at 20.83 runs apiece. Next in the list was Peter Trego, who is not to be under-estimated with the bat either. Last term, Trego made 234 runs at an average of 33.42 in this competition.

Surrey v Somerset - List A Records Sheet

Stuart Meaker looks set to make his 50th one-day career appearance, Gary Wilson (2,995) is closing in on 3,000 List A one-day runs and Somerset's Johann Myburgh (2,452) is approaching 2,500.

As per the Kent game at Beckenham, Surrey have named an unchanged 13-man squad. Given Mathew Pillans bowled just three overs in that contest, one senses that he may be asked to make way for the extra batsman. So, what do we think? Ben Foakes or Dominic Sibley?

Defeat by one wicket? Only kidding. Somerset appear to be fielding something of an experimental line-up in this year's Royal London. It does seem somewhat strange, for example, that, having signed Yasir Arafat (who is well known to the Surrey faithful) as a white ball specialist, the Cidermen aren't even considering him for games like this. But it's not their bowling that looks light. Without Trescothick and Rogers, much will depend on Hildreth, Trego and Myburgh putting up their hands. Prediction - Surrey's first home victory of the season.
