SURREY V SUSSEX at the Brit Oval (FCC1), 13-16 APRIL 2005

Sussex have not beaten Surrey at The Oval in the championship since 1994 and have only tasted victory in one of the last ten meetings between these two sides. But even if they are about to reverse that trend the weather could well scupper things - as it did twelve months ago when the Martlets would almost certainly have won had the storm clouds stayed away.

Chris Adams - who needs 53 for 7,000 career runs for the visitors - and former Ovalite Ian Ward remain the pick of the Sussex batsmen. However, Richard Montgomerie opened his f-c account with 140 against Loughborough UCCE the other day, Matthew Prior is one of the best wicketkeeper-batters in the country and Murray Goodwin offers so much more than his record in 2004 (756 championship runs at an average of 32.86) would otherwise suggest.

But if the Martlets are going to do anything in this summer's County Championship it will be thanks to their overseas leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, who has captured 185 wickets in 32 four-day matches for the Seasiders. However, unless James Kirtley rediscovers his pre-2004 form, the former Pakistan international will have it all to do once again. When fit, though, the veteran left-arm seamer Jason Lewry is a useful outlet for skipper Adams.

At this time of the year any time lost in a championship match at The Oval normally spells draw, so the weather forecast for the next four days decides it for me.

Mohammed Akram looks set to make his Surrey debut by lining up against his old county. But Steve Rixon has named a 14-man squad and is playing his cards pretty close to his chest. For what its worth, my bet is that Richard Clinton, Tim Murtagh and Nayan Doshi will be the ones to miss out on this occasion. But whoever gets the nod will know that, unlike last year, there will be real competition for their places this term.

I
Ward, R Montgomerie, M Goodwin, C Adams (capt), M Prior (wk), T Ambrose, R Martin-Jenkins, M Davis, Mushtaq Ahmed, J Kirtley and J Lewry.
