SURREY BROWN CAPS V SUSSEX SHARKS at Whitgift School (FPT), 28 MAY 2008

There may not be a Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final place resting on tomorrow's Whitgift Festival opener, however both teams will be looking to gain the psychological edge ahead of the Twenty20 Cup. When the Brown Caps beat the Sharks at Hove on May 8, the home side were missing Matt Prior, all-rounder Luke Wright and their main threat with the ball, Mushtaq Ahmed. But all three are currently available if Sussex have revenge in mind.

Without ‘Mushy’ the Sharks' batsmen have had it all to do. But no one still playing has scored more runs against Surrey in one-day cricket than the Martlets captain Chris Adams, who, along with Carl Hopkinson, Robin Martin-Jenkins and Prior is currently averaging over fifty in this year’s competition. Murray Goodwin and Michael Yardy also have a knack of doing well against the Brown Caps, so a 300-plus total is a must if Mark Butcher’s men have hopes of bowing out of the Trophy on a high.

Seeking to prevent this from happening will be Sussex's spin threat, which is more than just Mushtaq Ahmed. Rory Hamilton-Brown, Tom Smith and Michael Yardy have all bowled creditably in one-day cricket this summer. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Sharks' seamers.

Jonathan Batty has 199 List A dismissals and is four runs away from his 2,500th List A run. Alistair Brown has 19 one-day hundreds. Jade Dernbach has 49 wickets in List A cricket. Mark Ramprakash has 14 one-day hundreds against his name.

The Brown Caps look set to field the same eleven that beat Essex on Sunday, but teenage seamer Stuart Meaker has been named in the squad.

This one is impossible to call, so I won't. There's no way either side can reach the quarter-finals, so there is no guarantee that both sides be at equal strength. With overnight rain forecast, we may not even find out.
