SURREY BROWN CAPS V SUSSEX SHARKS at the Brit Oval (FPT), 19 MAY 2009

Sussex's win against Yorkshire today puts them in the FPT quarter-finals and ends Surrey's hopes of scraping into the last eight. So, with little riding on the result of this contest, it will be interesting to see what the team selection will be tomorrow. For instance, with the Twenty20 Cup starting next week, will Surrey recall James Benning?

Looking at the Sharks, it sounds easy, but if the Brown Caps can nip out Joyce (311 FPT runs at an average of 62.20), Goodwin and Yardy before they get going it is difficult to see who is going to make the runs for Sussex. With the ball, the Sharks' attack have rarely been economical in this season's Friends Provident, but they do take wickets at regular intervals. Tomorrow's result could therefore hinge on how successful the Oval outfit is in seeing off the likes of Yasir Arafat, James Kirtley (11 wickets at 30.54) and even Chris Nash, who picked up 4-40 today.

James Benning, with 2,465 List A runs, needs 35 more for 2,500. For the visitors, Luke Wright goes into the match with 74 List A career wickets.

Surrey have retained the same 13-man squad that line-up ahead of the two most recent FPT encounters.

OPPONENT DATE COMP RESULT VENUE SURREY OPPONENT
Durham 15 May 2009 FPT Lost By 60 Runs The Oval 227 (47.2) 287-4 (50)
Gloucestershire 13 May 2009 FPT Won By 164 Runs The Oval 306-6 (50) 142 (33.3)
Sussex 10 May 2009 FPT Lost By 2 Runs Hove 311-6 (50) 313-7 (50)

Durham 3 May 2009 FPT Lost By 1 Run The Riverside 265-6 (50) 266-7 (50)

You may be surprised by this, but, now that the pressure's off I fancy Surrey to win this game. Sussex are punching above their weight, in my opinion, and the game down at Hove could easily have gone the Brown Caps' way.

E Joyce, J Gatting, C Nash, M Goodwin, M Yardy (capt), R Hamilton-Brown, Yasir Arafat, R Martin-Jenkins, B Brown (wk), W Beer and J Kirtley.

Barry Dudleston and Steve Garratt.
