SURREY LIONS V SUSSEX SHARKS at the Kia Oval (CB40 Semi Final), 4 SEPTEMBER 2011

Sussex have cultivated a reputation, in recent years, for being one of the most consistent sides in one-day cricket. Last summer the Sharks just missed out on a place in the last four of the Clydesdale Bank 40. This year they scraped through, courtesy of a healthier net run rate than that of Middlesex, who also won 8 and lost 4 games in Group A.

Compared with Surrey, who have only had one batsman make a hundred in this summer's CB40, five Sussex players have reached three figures and two - Chris Nash (594 runs at an average of 74.25) and Ed Joyce - have managed it twice. But the Sharks have fared less well with the ball.

The absence of Luke Wright has been a huge blow. Of the overseas players Wayne Parnell, who is available for this contest, has not matched Naved-ul-Hasan's output. While the former England left-arm spinner, Monty Panesar has been Sussex's most economical bowler in the CB40 and Michael Yardy (17 wickets at 22.88 runs apiece) the partnership-breaker, the dark horses have been seamers Chris Liddle and Naved Arif.

Surrey look set to make two changes to the side that lost narrowly to Durham in their final Group B match, with Yasir Arafat and Tim Linley in line to replace Chris Jordan and Pragyan Ojha. The only other decision is likely to be whether more spin (in the shape of Zafar Ansari) rather than pace (which Stuart Meaker would bring to the party) is the way to go.

While pondering who I think will win this game, I asked myself if I would rather Surrey lose this one if it meant promotion in the County Championship. Given that I believe the weather will be a factor in the championship run-in, the realist in me said that a Lord's final provides the Lions' with their best chance of finishing the season on a high, so I'm going for a Surrey win.

E Joyce, C Nash, L Vincent, M Goodwin, M Yardy (capt), J Gatting, B Brown (wk), W Parnell, Naved Arif, C Liddle and M Panesar.

To be announced.
